What is Pilates

The Pilates Method is based on the teachings of Joseph  H. Pilates, who developed a system of exercises that targeted the abs (core), back, and butt muscles (all 3 make up the powerhouse).  After moving to the U.S. in 1926, Joseph opened a studio where he trained dancers from the New York City Ballet.  Since his death in 1967, instructors all over the world have continued to teach the Pilates Method.

Pilates is a conditioning program that strengthens the core, and tones and slims the entire body.  It improves muscle control, coordination, balance and flexibility. The practice of Pilates is experiencing all the movements from the inside out by focusing on the present movement, rather than placing the emphasis on finishing the movement. This achieves and maintains a balanced aligned body.  The repertoire is performed as a mat class or on specialized equipment utilizing springs for resistance.

The fundamental principles of Pilates:

  • Breathing
  • Concentration
  • Centering
  • Control
  • Precision
  • Fluid movement

While following the principles, you’re able to target the smaller, deeper muscles together with the larger muscles to improve coordination, balance and fluid movement.

It’s this mind/body connection that allows you to both tone your muscles, while attaining better posture, proper coordination and improved flexibility, and an overall healthier self-image.

Pilates isn’t about pursing an unrealistic goal of having a perfect body.  It’s about strengthening your body and your self-image.

The mind when housed within a healthy body, possesses a glorious sense of power

Joseph H. Pilates, letter to clients, 1939
